What To Do if My Engine Begins to Overheat?

An overheating engine in your RAM pickup truck may cause panic, but if you are on the road and the dashboard warning lights come on, you notice a strange smell coming from the engine, see smoke, or feel your car is not driving as it should, follow these precautions:

  1. Turn on the heat for only a few minutes - Turning off the air conditioning and increasing the heat to high may help to pull additional heat away from the engine.
  2. Open all the windows
  3. Pull over to a safe area on the side of the road and shut off the car for at least 15 minutes - Keep an eye on the temperature gauge, as it should move back to a normal range as the engine cools.
  4. Check and add coolant - Once your vehicle has cooled down check to see your coolant levels. This is only a temporary fix.
  5. Call for Assistance - If you do not feel comfortable driving your RAM 1500 even after it has stopped overheating or are not able to even drive at all, call for roadside assistance

How to Prevent My Engine from Overheating?

Regular maintenance checks will help foresee problems early on, before causing permanent damage to your vehicle. Other ways you can potentially prevent your RAM 1500 engine from overheating include:

  • Consistently monitor coolant levels
  • Drive with extra antifreeze bottles
  • Check the thermostat as you are driving
  • Do not overuse the car's air conditioning on extremely hot days
  • Refer to the vehicle owner's manual to stay up-to-date on coolant service flushes
