How Often Should I Change My Engine’s Coolant?

A cooling system flush is important to your vehicle's overall performance and health. As an overlooked maintenance routine, you may not know the intervals of when you should replace your engine's coolant. 

Depending on the vehicle and the coolant, the average time between flushes is two years or 30,000 miles for silicated coolants and up to five years or 100,000 miles for an extended drain coolant. Periodically, the coolant needs to be tested every 50,000 miles.

Warning Signs I Need Engine Needs a Coolant Flush?

Coolants, also known as anti-freeze will show signs that you need a flush or need more. Warning signs you should be aware of include:

• The temperature gauge reads hotter than normal when the engine is running
• Leaks and puddles beneath your vehicle (orange or green fluid)
• A grinding noise is coming from under the hood of your car
• Flecks of rust start to show up in the antifreeze/coolant liquid
• Steam or an odor similar to boiling maple syrup is coming from the engine

Why is Engine Coolant Important?

Coolant can deteriorate over time becoming more acidic and causing corrosion to other parts of your vehicle's engine including the radiator, water pump, thermostat, radiator cap, hoses, and other parts of the cooling system, as well as to the vehicle heater system.

Engine coolant helps regulate engine temperature in extreme conditions, preventing your engine from freezing in the winter and overheating in the summer.
